Getting ready to go back to school includes picking out clothes to wear on the first day, checking off items on the school supply list, and for many kids a new haircut. The Grace C. Mae Advocate Center helped 40 local children by providing haircuts free of charge on Friday. The event was made possible with the help of stylists from the area who volunteered their time.

One mom who brought in her two elementary-aged children said it helps, because going back to school is an expensive time with registration fees, lunch money and getting school supplies. Care Coordinator Lisa Miller hopes to offer more haircuts in the future, they increased it by 15 this year. She added the services are offered to any area students from pre-school to high school and there are no income guidelines.

Adam Martin, one of the stylists who donated his time Friday from 3 to 8 p.m., said he thinks it helps the kids get ready for school and boosts their self confidence. Other stylists who volunteer their time were Jessica Davis, Shannon Powers and Teira Koehler.

The kids also took home a gift bag with shampoo and other body care items.
