The two upperclassmen on this year’s Highland Huskies softball team (20-10 overall) earned high praise from coaches statewide. The Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union released the all-state softball teams for each class and Highland junior Kelsey Hora and senior Cheyann Adamson were selected for the team.

Hora, a unanimous first-team all-conference selection, was one of 22 girls selected to the Class 2A all-state first team. The Huskies’ starting center fielder topped the Southeast Iowa Super Conference in hits (62) and stolen bases (33). She also ranked second in the conference in triples (5), runs scored (43), batting average (.585), and on base percentage (.611). Hora received second team all state honors in 2014 as a freshman.

Adamson, a first-team all-conference catcher, was one of the 22 members of this year’s second team all-state squad. Adamson concluded her high school athletic career as tthe Southeast Iowa Super Conference leader in triples (6). She also ranked second with 41 runs batted in, and her 37 runs scored was the fifth most in the league. Adamson, who earned first-team all-state honors as a sophomore in 2014, will continue her softball career at Des Moines Area Community College.

Freshman Kylie Wood and eighth grader Haley Sweeting were named honorable mention all-state performers. Wood was the Huskies’ primary second baseman while Sweeting was Highland’s designated hitter for the final 13 games of the season.

The Highland Huskies ended the season with a record of 20-10 overall, their fourth straight 20-plus win season under head coach Carrie Wieland.
