Hunting season is upon us, and with it often comes hunting accidents. Lake Darling Park Ranger Zach Haworth says there are many ways to keep yourself and others safe while hunting, which starts with wearing orange hunting jackets. He advises you should always treat every weapon as if it’s loaded. Even if you think they’re empty, you should double and triple-check just to make sure. Additionally, you should always point firearms in a safe direction, and keep your finger off the trigger until ready to fire. Finally, he advised to never shoot at anything unless you’re sure you want to kill it. In addition to safety tips, Haworth said it’s a good idea to read up on the laws regarding the season you’re participating in, take time to make sure your licenses are up to date, and have the proper tags for what you’re hunting. The next hunting season is archery season, which begins October 1st.
