There have been 236 traffic fatalities in Iowa so far this year, as of August 12th, a 33% increase from last year. According to the Iowa Department of Transportation, at this time last year there were 178 traffic fatalities across the state. Of those 178 fatalities, 11 were caused by a driver distracted by a phone or device, up from five in 2014 and three in 2013. In 2015, Washington County had three traffic fatalities. Iowa and Johnson counties each had five, Keokuk County had two, Henry County had three and Louisa and Jefferson counties each had one traffic fatality in 2015.
