Postseason honors continue to accumulate for three juniors on the Lone Tree Lions baseball team (11-13 overall). The Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association released their 2016 All-District teams for all classes and soon-to-be-seniors Jovonte Squiers and Ross Swinton were selected to the Class 1A Southeast District squad.

Squiers was selected to the first-team all-district team as an utility player. He began the season at shortstop but transitioned into the Lions’ starting catcher after multiple injuries. Squiers led the Lions with 32 stolen bases, 35 runs scored, and 17 walks forced. He collected 31 hits, second most on the team, in 80 at bats. Behind the plate, Squiers threw out three base stealers in 21 chances.

Swinton was chosen as a second team all-district pitcher. Swinton’s 41 innings pitched topped the Lions’ staff this summer. He posted a 5-2 record with an earned run average of 2.03 and had a strikeout to walk ratio of nearly 3:1 (61 strikeouts; 21 walks). Swinton collected 20 hits in 76 at bats, including three doubles, two triples, and drove in 18 runs.

Dawson Swails rounds out Lone Tree’s second team all-district performers as a first baseman. Swails started 24 games at first base, posting a .994 fielding percentage. At the plate, Swails smashed a team-high 38 hits, including a home run, four doubles, and 18 runs driven in.

The Lions finished their season 11-13 overall, a seven-win regression from last year. Lone Tree loses Greg Feldman, Jared Hudson, and Jake Viner to graduation.
