Towards the end of the last school year, Mid-Prairie students Sawyer Black and David Fleming were given the honor of serving as this year’s drum majors. Black, a senior, said there’s no greater honor a band kid could receive, so he was very excited. Fleming, a junior, said it was kind of scary at first, because he went from being just a member of the band to being one of the ones in charge. Both feel like they’ve adjusted well to the responsibilities. During performances, Black conducts the first two songs and Fleming conducts the third.

Both feel the band is coming along nicely this year. They had a week of band camp in early August, and spent last week preparing for the football game Friday. They agreed everyone has played well so far, and they’re pleased with the progress. With homecoming earlier this year than usual, they said they will have to prepare four additional songs in a short period of time, but they feel confident it will come together. After high school, Black plans on majoring in music education in college. Fleming is unsure if he will attend college, but said if he does he’ll definitely continue with band.
