County rivals collided on the volleyball court Thursday in Washington. The Washington Demons (0-1 overall) opened their new season by hosting the Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks (4-0 overall) in a non-conference showdown. The Golden Hawks left Washington victorious, winning in straights sets (25-6, 25-17, 25-15).

Twenty-six of Mid-Prairie’s 27 kills were recorded by a pair of athletes. Sophomore Jaedynn Evans led the way with 15 kills, while senior Ali Butters scored the Golden Hawks 11 points. Senior Clarice Murphy assisted on 22 kills for Mid Prairie.

The win pushes Mid-Prairie’s early season winning streak to four. The Golden Hawks return to the court September 6, opening up River Valley Conference play against the Durant Wildcats (0-0 overall).

The loss drops Washington to 0-1 overall. They return to the court Saturday, taking part in the Grinnell volleyball tournament.
