Summer is in full swing and people have been mowing lawns and taking care of landscapes, however crabgrass can pop up and damage a landscape’s appearance. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach horticulturists shared some advice on how to keep it under control. Crabgrass is a light green, wide-bladed grass and is an annual, warm-season grass. The bst way to prevent infestations in lawns is to maintain a healthy, thick lawn with proper mowing, irrigation, and fertilization. A herbicide may be necessary to control crabgrass. In flower and vegetable gardens, hand pulling and hoeing the grass are the best ways to control crabgrass, handpulling is best done after a good rain.
