As autumn approaches many home gardens are producing many foods that can soon be harvested and stored to enjoy later. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach horticulturists advise there are recommended ways to store potatoes and onions.. Potatoes should be cured, meaning once they’re harvested put them at a temperature of 50 to 60 degrees with humidity at 85 to 90% for two weeks. This allows the skin to thicken. After they’re cured, store them in a dark location at 40 degrees.

To cure onions, put them in a warm, dry, well-ventilated location and spread them out in a single layer on a dry surface for two to three weeks. To store them, cut off the tops about an inch above the bulbs and put them in a mesh bag or wire basket or crate that allows air to circulate through the onions. Keep them in a cool, dry location.
