A special election will be held to fill a vacant seat on the Washington City Council. Initially the council planned to fill the Ward 2 position by appointment, but during Tuesday’s council meeting a petition of over 60 signatures was presented to the council calling for the election. Steven Gault, who presented the petition, expressed frustration with the council, the YMCA project and the proposal for bonds to help pay for it, and high water bill.

City Attorney Kevin Olson said the next step is to verify the signatures and then work with the county auditor’s office to set a date for the election. The seat was vacated by councilman Russ Zieglowsky earlier this month, as he moved to a different ward in town and could no longer represent the ward.
