In 1866, St. James began teaching students in Washington and 10 years later the school was built – the 150 years of the school is being celebrated throughout this school year. Beth McBride, principal of the Catholic elementary school, shares they have themed recognitions for the upcoming months including 150 years of history in October, 150 resolutions in January and 150 acts from the heart in February. October 28th will see the re-dedication of the school with a special guest – Bishop Amos.

Local historian Michael Zahs says the first log structure for a church was built in 1861 and the first school was taught in 1866. According to the school’s website, the present school was dedicated in 1957 with four religious sisters teaching first through eighth grade students. The school currently holds classes for preschool through fifth grade students.
