A six-win season culminated in multiple postseason honors for members of the Winfield-Mount Union Wolves baseball team (6-15 overall). The coaches of the Southeast Iowa Super Conference named two W-MU players to the first team squad, two to the second team, and two additional players were named honorable mention athletes.

A pair of W-MU seniors landed on the league’s first team all-conference squad. Matthew Niebuhr concluded his high school athletic career on the first team as an outfielder. Niebuhr started 19 of 21 games in center field. He collected 20 hits in 58 at bats, six going for extra bases. He forced a team high 14 walks and his 15 runs driven in ranked second on the team. Niebuhr will continue his baseball career next season at Cornell College in Mount Vernon.

Ross Vantiger was the Wolves’ other first team all-conference selection as a catcher. Vantiger started 18 games behind the plate. He amassed 24 hits in 67 at bats, two going for extra bases. Vantiger was one of only two Wolves to record a home run, driving in 10 runs at the plate. His 15 stolen bases were the second most on the team.

Senior Darren Hunter was named to the all-conference second team as an infielder. Starting 17 games at shortstop, Hunter collected 14 hits in 55 at bats, nine going for extra bases. He recorded two home runs, six doubles, and a triple. He also drove in 20 runs. Hunter will continue his baseball career next season for the Cornell College Rams.

Junior Kleyton Benedict found his name on the second team all-conference squad as an outfielder. Of his 21 starts this season, 15 were in left field. He recorded 25 hits in 63 at bats, the most hits on the team. Benedict drove in 13 runs and he reached safely on 90 percent of his stolen base attempts (9-10).

Senior Garrett Baker and sophomore B.J. Rodgers were named honorable mention performers.  Baker spent time at four positions this summer, including pitcher, first base, left field, and right field. Rodgers defended five positions in the field, including pitcher, second base, shortstop, third base, and right field.

The Wolves’ season ended with a record of 6-15 overall, an eight-win regression from last year. W-MU loses Niebuhr, Vantiger, Hunter, Baker, Levi Watson-Hewitt, Kolt Rossiter, Tyler Reiman, and Max Houston to graduation.
