A Hiawatha company will replace the Washington County Courthouse’s slate tile roof this fall. Sections of the current tile roof have chipped away and fallen off, at Tuesday’s Washington County Board of Supervisors meeting auditor Dan Widmer showed pieces he’d picked up around the building recently. Supervisor chairman Richard Young said it isn’t safe, a piece could potentially fall and hit someone.

Supervisor Abe Miller voted in favor of the Brava roof tile and Pa’s Construction’s installation this fall, in part because the cost is less than replacing the roof with slate and it has a 50-year warranty. Tuesday, the supervisors approved the only bid they received for removing the current roof and installing a new one with snow guards for $63,890. The shingles the supervisors selected are composite roof tiles created by Brava Roof Tile in Washington. The new tiles will look like the current slate tiles to stay with the style of the building and cost about $48,000.
