The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk football team opens the district season tonight when they host the West Liberty Comets.

Mid-Prairie enters this evening with a 1-1 overall record, beating Louisa-Muscatine 41-14 week one and falling to Washington in week two 49-14. Karson Gingerich led the way for the Hawks against the Demons, going nine of 13 through the air for 135 yards and a touchdown. Ricky Vargas had 14 carries for 72 yards and a touchdown, Levi Duwa had six catches for 73 yards and a touchdown. Washington outgained Mid-Prairie 671-238 in the game. On the year, Mid-Prairie is led by Gingerich through the air who is 15 of 22 for 226 yards two touchdowns and no interceptions. Vargas has 156 yards and three touchdowns on  24 carries, and Duwa has seven catches for 82 yards and two scores. Jason Tew is Mid-Prairie’s leading tackler with 13.5 on the season.

West Liberty comes into tonight with an 0-2 record, suffering losses to West Branch and Highland so far this season. Against Highland, the Comets fell 50-14. West Liberty was outgained 340-231. The Comets committed six turnovers in the loss. West Liberty is led on the year by Seth Feldman who is 16 of 30 through the air for 198 yards, a touchdown and two picks. Joe Kelly is the leading ground gainer with 153 yards and two touchdowns on 24 carries. Noah Feldman leads the Comet receiving corps with 13 catches for 184 yards and one touchdown.

Last year these two teams met at Memorial Field in West Liberty, a game that Mid-Prairie won 43-20 despite trailing 14-0 at the half. Ricky Vargas finished the game with 185 yards rushing on 22 carries with three touchdowns.
