It’s four games into the season, and the No. 5 Lone Tree Lions football team (4-0 overall) leads the state in points scored.The Lions have won their first four contests by an average of 43 points. The Lions will put their unblemished record on the line tonight, hosting the English Valleys Bears (0-3 overall) in Lone Tree’s annual homecoming game.

The Lions’ early season success has been predicated on their ability to run the football and force turnovers. Lone Tree and Iowa Valley are the only two teams in 8-man District 4 who’ve rushed for over 1,000 yards in the first four games. The Lions tallied a district-best 1,123 yards on the ground, an average of 7.6 yards per carry, and have scored 23 touchdowns. Lone Tree’s defense has forced 15 turnovers, eight interceptions and seven fumble recoveries. The Lions’ first team defense hadn’t allowed a touchdown prior to last week’s 30-12 victory at Springville.

The Bears are looking to end a losing skid.. English Valleys has lost their last nine games, scoring 30 points in three games this season. English Valleys’ last victory came a year ago, winning 33-6 over the Tri-County Trojans on September 11, 2015.
