With an average of 64 points in their first two games of the season the Lone Tree Lions (2-0 overall) find themselves ranked in this week’s 8-man football poll. Back-to-back wins has the Lone Tree Lions recognized as the No. 6 ranked team in the latest Radio Iowa football poll. The teams ahead of Lone Tree include Don Bosco (1-0 overall), Fremont-Mills (1-0 overall), Audubon (1-0 overall), Central Elkader (1-0 overall) and Turkey Valley (1-0 overall).

With convincing victories over Central City (63-22) and Tri-County (66-0), Lone Tree is off to their best start since the 2011 season. The Lions finished that year 10-2 overall, and advanced to the quarterfinal round of the Class A playoffs.

The Lions have played well on both sides of the ball this season. Lone Tree’s first-team defense has yet to allow a touchdown. . Seniors Jovonte Squiers , Trey Pierson and Drake Hotz have each recorded three or more touchdowns this season. Squiers has recorded three rushing and receiving touchdowns, and two special teams touchdowns. Pierson has four passing touchdowns and an interception returned for a score. All three of Hotz’s touchdowns have come on the ground.

The No. 6 Lone Tree football team is on the road for the first time this season, traveling to HLV for a non-district game versus the Warriors (1-1 overall). HLV lost to the Iowa Valley Tigers (2-0 overall), 57-34, in Marengo last week.
