Two area schools are set to continue their district rivalry tonight on the football field. The No. 4 Lone Tree Lions (5-0 overall) and the WACO Warriors (3-3 overall) have been district opponents multiple times recently in Class A 11-man football. Both schools are halfway through their initial 8-man football seasons, and will battle one another tonight in Wayland.

The Lions are coming off their bye week. Through five games, Lone Tree has scored 295 points, ranking fourth in the state regardless of class. The Lions have five players who’ve amassed more than 100 yards rushing this season, including Drake Hotz (451), Jovonte Squiers (267), Sam Fuhrmeister (179), Trey Pierson (141), and Bryce Houser (100). The quintet has accounted for 23 rushing touchdowns. Pierson, the Lions’ starting quarterback, has completed two-thirds of his passes, racking up 381 yards and eight touchdowns. Lone Tree’s defense has allowed 8.4 points per game, and has given up 20 total points the last four games including two shutouts.

The Warriors have won three of the last four games after starting the season 0-2. The Warriors’ defense posted their first shutout in 8-man football last week in a 49-0 triumph over English Valleys (0-6 overall). Colton Horak, this week’s KCII Hedge Above Lawncare Athlete of the Week, is second in the district with 822 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns. Horak leads the district with 29 extra points converted and four interceptions. Wyatt Harbison ranks third in the group with 43 total tackles.

The Lions edged the Warriors, 36-17, last season in Lone Tree. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Roth Field.
