The Fourth Annual Civil War Days is returning to the Louisa County Historical Society in Wapello this weekend. Historical Society President Norma McCormac says there will be several activities over the two-day event, including weapon demonstrations by the Southeast Iowa Civil War Roundtable. Additional activities include reenactors in authentic costumes, Abraham Lincoln artifacts, a Civil War photography demonstration, and information presented about the Littleton Brothers. There will also be a Civil War era meal on Saturday, featuring sweet potato coffee. The Littleton Brothers were six brothers from Toolesboro who fought and died for the North.

McCormac believes events like Civil War Days are important to keep history alive and remind everyone of our country’s struggles. She emphasized the abolition of slavery and the fight to make the country whole as particularly important lessons for today’s generations. Eventually, she would like to have enough people and cooperation to do a full battle reenactment, though that’s still several years away. Civil War Days run Saturday from 1-4 p.m., and Sunday from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. There is no cost for the event, and a free-will offering will be accepted for the meals.
