The Mid-Prairie School District is ready for a big night tonight when they host the West Liberty Comets on the football field.

Aside from the action on the field, Mid-Prairie will recognize past excellence and unveil a vision for the future with tonight’s activities.

The 1969 Golden Hawk football team will be honored tonight with events throughout the evening. The 1969 team is the only team in the history of school to finish the season undefeated, posting a final record of 9-0. During their run the Hawks had wins over WACO, Cardinal of Eldon, West Liberty, West Branch, Durant, Mount Vernon, Iowa City, City High, Wilton and Solon on the way to the Eastern Iowa Hawkeye Conference Championship. The Hawks were the second highest scoring team in school history, posting 388 points during the season, a 43 points per game average. The defense allowed just 63 points all year, a seven points per game average. Individually, those Hawks were led by Dan Jirsa and Reed Edmundson who both threw for more than 1,000 yards. Jim Beranek led the team on the ground with 15 touchdowns and 664 total yards. Dan Dickel was the leading receiver with 22 catches for 330 yards as the Golden Hawks used the “run and shoot” offense to breeze by their opponents. Defensively, Loren Southwick was the team’s leading tackler.

Members of the 1969 Mid-Prairie football team, their spouses, coaches, managers and cheerleaders are coming from all over the country to be at tonight’s game. Members of the 1969 team will also serve as honorary captains during the game’s coin toss.

With an eye to the future, the Mid-Prairie School District will also have their new indoor practice facility on display for the public tonight with an open house. The project has roots back to 2014 when the district submitted a funding request to the Washington County Riverboat Foundation and received a $200,000 grant toward the project. The final cost of the project was $550,000 with ground breaking in the fall of 2015. This facility will serve as an extra space for student activities in the district including athletics, marching band and more.

The open house begins tonight at 4:30 and continues until kickoff of the varsity game. KCII will have live coverage of the contest between Mid-Prairie and West Liberty beginning with the Washington HyVee pregame show at 6:45, including full interviews with 1969 football team members Dan Dickel, Don Showalter and head coach Tim Grady with kickoff at 7:30 on AM 1380, FM 102.5 and KCIIradio.com.
