The Mid-Prairie School District was recently presented a check for nearly $30,000. At the most recent school board meeting, Gary Fisher of Fisher Insurance Agency in Kalona presented the school with a check for the 2016 insurance group dividend. Fisher explained the school is one of over 320 K-12 public schools, area education agencies, and community colleges in Iowa that participates in the Iowa Association of School Boards Safety Insurance Group. Every year a total insurance dividend is calculated.

Fisher said thanks to the efforts of cities and cooperation from the weather, the schools in the organization haven’t had dramatic losses the last several years. As a result, there was a surplus after Employers Mutual Company Insurance took their five percent of profits, and that goes back to the schools. Fisher said this year’s dividend was the largest the organization has ever had, at $6.9 million. Mid-Prairie’s share of that dividend was $27,800, and Fisher presented Board President Jeremy Pickard with the check. The IASB Safety Insurance Group has operated for the past 47 years, and Mid-Prairie has been a part of it for the last 30.
