Starting next week, the City of Kalona will be meeting with the design architects regarding the community center project, and they’ll be joined by four students from Mid-Prairie High School. Kalona City Administrator Ryan Schlabaugh said the students each filled out a questionnaire about why they want to join the project, and each has different reasons for taking part. These include interests in architecture, design, construction management, and project management. Schlabaugh likes that they each have a little bit different scope, and hopes they’ll each take to certain parts of the project and be able to engage the professionals.
Next week the city will meet with the design group, S & K Cabinetry in Coralville, to discuss materials and what type of look they’d like to have for the facility. Presently the city is focusing on cost estimates and solidifying design aspects. Schlabaugh expects the city to seek bids for the construction as early as December, with construction on the new facility beginning in January or February.
