Fall is less than two weeks away and with that comes the apple harvest. Horticulturists with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, advise the best time to harvest apples depends on the type of apple from mid- to late-September. Apples are ready to be picked when they’re firm, crisp and well-colored. Be sure to discard any bruised or cut apples as you harvest them. The best way to store apples is at a temperature near 32 degrees with relative humidity between 90 and 95. Apples stored near 32 degrees will keep two to three times longer than those stored between 45 and 50 degrees.
