If you or someone you know wants to improve their reading and writing skills, there’s a free program offered in Washington. The tutoring program pairs each individual up with his or her own tutor to work on their desired skills. Dr. Monie Hayes, who organizes the program at the Kirkwood Washington Regional Center, shares they’re looking to expand the program with more students and have tutors ready for sessions.

One tutor is Roger Farmer and he says he begins with ready a couple of paragraphs and then writing skills. He also goes over article headlines and flash cards with the 200 most used words. Farmer also talks about road signs, anything you may see from day to day, as well as poems, which are more difficult but fun with their rhyme and rhythm.

Once paired up, tutors and students meet for an hour or two each week at a time that best suits the student. To sign up or get more information contact the Kirkwood Washington Regional Center.
