A late gamble didn’t pan out for the Washington Demon football team (5-3 overall) last night in Oskaloosa. As heard on FM 106.1 and KCIIRadio.com, the Demons traveled to the Lacey Sports Complex for a district showdown versus the Indians (6-2 overall). A failed two-point conversion by Washington late in the fourth quarter was the difference in Oskaloosa’s 28-27 victory.

The Indians scored all four of their touchdowns on passes of 25 yards or more, while Washington found the endzone four times on the ground. Oskaloosa scored first on a 26-yard touchdown pass from Ethan Arnold to Tanner DeKock; The score 7-0 with 9:51 remaining in the first quarter. Washington responded five minutes later, finding the endzone on an 11-yard run by quarterback Javionn Willis. A failed two point conversion kept Osklaoosa ahead, 7-6. The Indians were in the endzone 50 seconds later on a 66-yard touchdown reception from Arnold to Jack Moore. The extra point made the Indian advantage, 14-6, with 3:59 left in the opening frame.

Washington scored their second touchdown five seconds into the second quarter on an eight yard touchdown run by Willis. A successful two-point conversion tied the game at 14. The Demons took their only lead of the game with 2:40 left in the first half. Running back Jack Redlinger scored on a one-yard run to give Washington the lead, 21-14. Oskaloosa capped off the first half scoring with 75 seconds left in the half. Arnold completed a pass to Moore, who ran it 53 yards for a score. The game was tied at 21 after the first half.

Oskaloosa took the lead for good midway through the third quarter. Arnold found Bennett Spry for a 35-yard touchdown connection to make the Indian advantage, 28-21 with 5:06 showing on the third quarter clock. Washington turned a late Indian interception in points. Willis ran in his third touchdown of the game from eight yards out. The ensuing play he was stopped a yard short on a two-point conversion attempt as Oskaloosa kept the lead, 28-27. Washington failed to recover the onside kick, and Oskaloosa escaped with a one point win.

The loss drops Washington to 5-3 overall and 3-3 in district play. The Demons conclude their season next Friday, hosting the Fort Madison Bloodhounds (0-8 overall).
