Washington has two instrumentalists who stood out to judges during the recent All-State Music Festival auditions. Gwen Flannery was selected for the orchestra oboe position, the top oboe spot for the district. Addison McGuire was selected as the second alternate flute for the section. Washington High School band director Don Hughes says this means she has a chane to participate if there are unfilled flute slots at the other districts.
Flannery and McGuire, along with other area musicians, auditioned in Washington at the southeast district auditions. Hughes says it’s “known as one of the most competitive districts in the state.” About 700 student musicians competed for approximately 100 spots. The All-State Music Festival will be held in Ames with the performance on November 19th.
