The first winning football season in four years ended Friday for the Highland Huskies (5-4). The Wapello Indians, one of the top passing teams in Class 1A District 4, recorded 316 rushing yards and four touchdowns in a 41-14 victory at Highland High School.

A majority of Wapello’s rushing yards came from Adrian Lanz, who compiled 220 yards on 27 carries and three scores. Quarterback Logan Belzer completed seven of his eight passes for 95 yards and two touchdowns. Rogan Pforts added 96 yards of total offense (68 rushing) and two touchdowns. Clayton Meeker caught four passes for 61 yards and one touchdown. Wapello finished tied for the district lead with 16 touchdown passes and ranks second in passing yards with 1,397.

Highland tallied 252 yards of total offense. Quarterback Jake Wood accounted for 165 total yards (138 passing) and two rushing touchdowns. Running back Bill Burton rushed for a team-high 55 yards on 10 carries. Wide receiver Trent Lasek caught five receptions for 74 yards.

The loss concludes Highland’s season with a 5-4 overall record. The Huskies will lose Wood, Burton, Lasek, Blake Donovan, Logan Dutton, Matt Hoenig, Johnny Poeschel, Chase Rath and Nate Yahnke to graduation.
