At their most recent meeting, the Highland School Board approved the submission of their yearly application for Title 1 funding. Business Director Sue Rich explained Title 1 funds go toward programs and teachers that aid elementary students who are falling behind in subjects such as reading and math. Highland employs 1.6 Title 1 teachers, meaning one full-time and one part-time teacher. Rich said every year they have to submit an application to the federal government for continued Title 1 support, and the application has to be approved by the school board. The government will now allocate a certain dollar amount to the school, which they will use to help the at-risk students identified based on testing.
