The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk football team served as rude guests Friday night in Goose Lake, blasting the Northeast High School Rebels on their homecoming 62-22.

The Golden Hawks raced out to a fast start, scoring four times in the first quarter, three Ricky Vargas touchdown runs, the longest from 52 yards and a Keaton Duwa 53 yard touchdown run pushed the Golden Hawks out to a 28-8 lead after the first frame. In the second Mid-Prairie went to the air as Karson Gingerich hooked up with Terrhyn Jacoby from 32 yards out, and again on the final play of the half from 39 yards out. With Vargas’ fourth touchdown run of the night sandwiched between those two scores the Hawks took a comfortable 48-8 lead into the break.

Mid-Prairie marched the opening possession of the second half to the end zone with the fifth touchdown run of the night by Vargas, second most in Mid-Prairie history in a single game making it 55-8. The Hawks would get one more Keaton Duwa touchdown run, this one from seven yards out to end their scoring. The Rebels scored twice in the fourth quarter with the game already decided.

Mid-Prairie outgained Northeast 506 to 265 on the night, including 395 to -40 on the ground. Mid-Prairie was led by Ricky Vargas with 268 yards on 22 carries. His night pushes him over 2,000 yards for his Golden Hawk career and into sixth place all-time on the career rushing yards list with 2,186. The 268 yards are the seventh highest rushing total for a player in a single game in Golden Hawk history. His five touchdowns run his career total to 28, fifth most in school history. The Golden Hawks 62 points ties the fourth most ever scored in a single game in school history with 2013 against West Burlington, Notre Dame, 2003 against Highland-Lone Tree and 1968 against Wilton. Karson Gingerich finished five of seven for 111 yards and two touchdowns. Terrhyn Jacoby had three catches for 86 yards and two scores. Defensively, Jason Tew had four total tackles, three and a half for loss, two and a half sacks, a forced fumble and recovery.

With the win Mid-Prairie is now 3-4 overall and will face Anamosa on Senior Night next week at Dwight G. Sattler Field in Wellman.
