A season-high six turnovers forced by the Washington Demon defense (5-3 overall; 3-3 Class 3A District 5) were negated by several mistakes in multiple areas Friday. As heard on FM 106.1 and KCIIRadio.com, the Demons traveled to Oskaloosa for a district showdown versus the Indians (6-3 overall; 5-1 Class 3A District 5). Washington scored the potential go-ahead touchdown with 1:28 remaining but failed to convert the two-point conversion in a 28-27 loss. The Demons were stopped one yard short of the endzone on the attempt.

Washington’s senior-led front seven recorded all six turnovers, five inside Oskaloosa’s 40-yard line. The starting defensive line of Bryce Sinn, Seth Townsen, and Karlton Skubal each came away with a strip sack. Linebacker Wil Marek also recovered a fumble, while John Dillon and Matt Reighard came away with interceptions. Four of the turnovers were made in the first half. The defense did allow the Indians to score on touchdown passes of 26, 35, 53, and 66 yards.

The Demons hurt themselves on offensive and special teams miscues. Washington fumbled the ball twice inside the Indians’ red zone and missed a pair of field goals from 32 and 44 yards out. Washington was also flagged seven times for a total of 60 yards.

All four of Washington’s touchdowns came on the ground. Quarterback Javionn Willis ran the ball 21 times for 111 yards and three scores and also completed 12 of 15 passes for 91 yards. Jack Redlinger scored the other touchdown on a one-yard run in the second quarter and amassed a team-best 136 yards rushing. Dalton Myers racked up 69 receiving yards on seven receptions.

The loss drops Washington’s overall record to 5-3 and 3-3 in the district. The Demons wrap up their regular season schedule Friday at home versus the Fort Madison Bloodhounds (0-8). The Bloodhounds lost to the Keokuk Chiefs (5-3), 55-12, Friday in Fort Madison.
