Fall is here and winter is just around the corner, but now is the time to be preparing spring-flowering bulbs. According to Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, spring-flowering bulbs like tulips and daffodils should be planted in early fall, between late September to early November. Keep in mind when planting the bulbs, that they perform best in areas that receive at least six hours of direct sun each day. It’s recommend to plant these flower bulbs in clusters or groups. Tulips and daffodils should be planted with 10 or more cultivars in an area, while smaller growing plants like hyacinths should be planted in clusters of 25 or more. Bulbs should be planted at a depth three to four times their maximum bulb diameter. After they’re planted, water the bulbs to promote good root development before winter arrives.
