Red flags for domestic violence can include private or public humiliation, and isolation from family and friends. During this Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the Domestic Violence Intervention Program, which serves Washington County, is urging people to look around and recognize the signs. According to the DVIP, 257 people in Iowa have been killed by an intimate partner in the last 11 years. One in three women and one in seven men will experience domestic violence in their lifetime.
Brad Koenig with DVIP explains there is help nearby. The Washington County Domestic Violence Coalition can be reached at 457-0027 locally or a 24-hour crisis phone line is 1-800-373-1043.
