The last game of the season is tonight for the Washington Demon football team (5-3 overall; 3-3 Class 3A District 5). The Demons welcome the winless Fort Madison Bloodhounds (0-8 overall) to Case Field for Washington’s senior night game. Last week’s 28-27 loss to the Oskaloosa Indians (6-2 overall; 5-1 Class 3A District 5) gave the Demons their third loss in the district, dropping Washington in a tie for third place with the Keokuk Chiefs (5-3 overall; 3-3 Class 3A District 5). Under the new playoff format, which pared down the playoff field from 32 teams to 16, Washington will likely miss the playoffs for the first time since the 2010 season. The top two teams in each district automatically qualify for the playoffs and two wildcard spots are determined based on the best records of all the non-automatic qualifiers. The Chiefs hold the tiebreaker over the Demons after a 16-12 victory during Washington’s homecoming game on September 30.

Washington seniors forced a season-high six turnovers against Oskaloosa, five inside the Indians’ 40-yard line. The starting defensive line of Bryce Sinn, Seth Townsen, and Karlton Skubal each came away with a strip sack. Linebacker Wil Marek also recovered a fumble, while John Dillon and Matt Reighard came away with interceptions. The defense did allow the Indians to score on touchdown passes of 26, 35, 53, and 66 yards. Offense and special teams mistakes negated the Demons’ defensive effort. Washington fumbled the ball twice inside the Indians’ red zone and missed a pair of field goals from 32 and 44 yards out. Washington was also flagged seven times for a total of 60 yards. Jaivonn Willis has filled in at the quarterback position for Washington the last two games. He’s amassed 415 yards of total offense (226 rushing) and four rushing touchdowns. Willis scored a career-high three rushing touchdowns versus the Indians.

Points have been hard to come by this season for the Fort Madison Bloodhounds. Since scoring 20 points in a seven point loss to Central Lee in week one, the Bloodhounds have been outscored 376-27 in the last seven games. Shance Redd-Donald tops the team with 354 yards of total offense (343 rushing) and three touchdowns. Redd-Donald has also leads the team with 33 total tackles and three interceptions.
