The pool contract between the City of Washington and the YMCA, as well as ordinance changes regarding the Historic Preservation Commission will be discussed at tonight’s Washington City Council meeting. The YMCA has managed the Steele Family Aquatic Center in Washington for the past three seasons, with the City responsible for costs related to the structure and the YMCA handling all other costs, but keeping the revenue. Last year the YMCA’s management fee was $8,500 but the YMCA has proposed that the fee increase to $30,000 next year. The Park Board’s recommendation is to have the City assume the costs of utilities and pool chemicals, which equals about $25,000 and then not pay a management fee.

The possible ordinance changes with the historic preservation commission would have a formal process in place to prevent historically significant structures from being thoughtlessly demolished, similar to the City of Marion’s ordinance.

The meeting begins at 6 p.m. tonight at the Washington Public Library.
