The number of West Nile Virus cases in Iowa has increased in the last two weeks. According to the Iowa Department of Public Health there are now 12 cases in horses and 25 cases of the virus in humans, up from 15. Washington County has no reports of West Nile Virus in a person, but does have one horse case. Jefferson County has one horse case, while Johnson County has two horse cases and one human case.

Lynn Fisher with Washington County Public Health reminds people to protect themselves from mosquito bites, since mosquitoes transmit the virus. A repellent with DEET, picaridin or oil of lemon eucalyptus is recommended. Also, wear long sleeves and pants to prevent bites. According to IDPH, about 20% of people infected will have mild to moderate symptoms and less than one percent of people infected become seriously ill or die. Remember, mosquitoes are most active at dusk and dawn.
