Two Winfield-Mt. Union senior cross country runners stepped across the finish line of the Southeast Iowa Super Conference meet fast enough to earn all-conference honors. Gavin Bencze and Brock Fricke represent the Wolves as all-conference athletes.

Bencze was the fifth runner to cross the finish line in the boys’ race with a time of 18:10. He posted a mile pace of 5:52. This is the second straight season Bencze has earned all-conference honors, taking fifth place in last year’s race.

Fricke earned all-conference honors for the first time. He clocked his race in 18:51, the 12th best finish in the boys’ field.

The meet was held last Thursday in Burlington with runners vying for 15 spots on the all-conference squad.The race featured athletes from Cardinal, Central Lee, Columbus, Danville-New London, Highland, Holy Trinity, Iowa Mennonite School, Louisa-Muscatine, Lone Tree, Mediapolis, Notre Dame-West Burlington, Pekin, Van Buren, WACO and Wapello.

The Winfield-Mount Union Wolves cross country teams continue their race season tonight in Lee County, running in the Central Lee Invitational. Runners from Cardinal, Central Lee, Columbus, Danville-New London, Fort Madison, Holy Trinity, Keokuk, Louisa-Muscatine, Mediapolis, Mount Pleasant, Van Buren and Wapello are set to compete. Varsity races are scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. at Central Lee High School.
