Iowans are reminded to buckle up while traveling during the holidays. Law enforcement agencies across the state will be ramping up patrols and looking for seat belt violations. Last year, over the holiday five people were killed in Iowa. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) during the 2014 Thanksgiving holiday, 341 vehicle occupants were killed nationwide in traffic crashes. Of those deaths, 50% of the fatalities were not wearing seat belts. According to the NHTSA, wearing a seat belt can reduce the risk of a fatal injury by 45%.
