Mistakes cost the Washington Demon girls’ basketball team (1-1) their first loss of the season Tuesday. As heard on FM 106.1 and KCIIRadio.com, Washington traveled to Burlington High School for a non-conference battle versus the Class 5A Grayhounds (1-1). At the end of regulation the game was tied at 50; Burlington outscored Washington 11-6 in the overtime period for a 61-56 victory.

Washington entered the fourth quarter holding a 38-33 advantage. The Demons sent the Grayhounds to the line 25 times in the final 12 minutes. Burlington converted 16 free throws, 10 in the fourth quarter and six in overtime. Terria Baker scored a team-high 21 points for the Grayhounds. Washington also committed 23 turnovers, 12 coming in the last 12 minutes.

Sarah Nacos topped Washington with 21 points. Isabel Bailey scored 10 of her 14 points in the first half.

The loss evens Washington’s record at 1-1. The Demons will hold their home opener Saturday, hosting the Solon Spartans. The varsity game tips off at 3 p.m. at Washington High School.
