The season opener for the Washington Demon girls basketball team (1-0) was a tale of two halves. As heard on AM/FM KCII and KCIIRadio.com, the Demons traveled to Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont High School for their annual non-conference meeting versus the Rockets. Washington built a 19-point halftime lead and held on for a 60-54 triumph.

The Demons made seven three-point baskets in the first half to build a 37-18 halftime advantage. The Rockets erased the deficit due to 18 second- half turnovers by Washington. Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont took a 52-51 lead with just over two minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. Washington ended the game on a 9-1 run to reclaim the lead and make the final score, 60-54.

Sarah Nacos led the way for Washington with 23 points, including an 18-point first half. Morgan Brinning had nine points, while Brooke Stout added eight points and 10 rebounds. Briana Ver Steegh led the Rockets with 18 points.

The Demons resume play Tuesday at Burlington.
