Iowa’s influenza activity is currently very low but the Iowa Department of Public Health advises now is the time to get an annual flu shot. The flu season typically starts in November and peaks in Iowa in January or February. The flu vaccination can take up to two weeks for your body to develop the full protection, according to IDPH Medical Director, Dr. Patricia Quinlisk. Everyone over six months of age is recommended to get a flu vaccine. Groups who are higher risk of developing serious complications, like pneumonia, include pregnant women, children, older adults, and people with certain medical conditions. It has been show that pregnant women who get vaccinated pass on protection to newborns.
