Monica Reyes, cofounder of Dream Iowa, will be holding a meeting about immigration and Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) in Washington Friday. The event is presented by the new non-profit group Latinos for Washington, Inc. at the Washington Public Library. According to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, people can request consideration for DACA if they were under the age of 31 as of June 15, 2012, came to the U.S. before turning 16, have continuously lived in the U.S., never had lawful immigration status before June 15, 2012, are currently in high school or have completed high school, have not been convicted of a felony or significant misdemeanor, and do not pose a threat to national security of public safety.

Jacqueline Amigon, with the group, explains there will also be a couple of attorneys in attendance to help answer questions. She said, “Immigration is a very touchy and sensitive subject and we feel that a lot of people don’t look for assistance because of fear.” This event will go over personal and legal rights.

The event is free and open to the public. Doors open at 6 p.m. and will have free food and free childcare, with the program starting at about 6:30 p.m.
