In honor of Veterans Day, Mid-Prairie High School is bringing more than 20 area veterans to the school Friday for an assembly and luncheon with the students. According to family and consumer sciences teacher Sarah O’Rourke, who is also co-advisor for the Mid-Prairie National Honor Society, after the assembly, the veterans and their families will be invited to share a meal with the students in the cafeteria. She feels it’s a great way to continue the tradition of having a veterans luncheon, while also getting students more involved with their guests.

O’Rourke believes bringing the veterans and students together is a good way to bridge any gaps between them. She says, “We do feel like there is somewhat of a disconnect between our high school students and the population of veterans in our area, whether it’s age or just the limited access we have to speak with those people. But the impact we think they can have on our students is very great.” She hopes by listening to their stories, it will help the students recognize it’s important to take time to celebrate those individuals who have served the community. O’Rourke says if members of the community would like to attend the Veterans Day assembly, they are welcome to join. The assembly will begin at 10:30 a.m. Friday. The school asks anyone interested in attending to let them know ahead of time so they can have sufficient seating.
