Aspiring conservationists are invited to join the Iowa Young Birders organization this Saturday for a field trip to the Port Louisa Wildlife Refuge. Attendees will have the opportunity to witness the waterbird migration, as well as participate in a tree-planting project to restore habitat. Tyler Harms, Executive Director of Iowa Young Birders, says the organization’s goal is to engage kids aged 8-18 in outdoor activities through birds. They host numerous field trips throughout the year to encourage kids to get outside, while helping them understand birds and bird habitats.

Harms believes Port Louisa is a great place to visit in the fall, because the spectacle and diversity of birds is outstanding. He’s visited the refuge a number of times and is still amazed at the amount of different birds that can be viewed in the area during the fall. Additionally, he feels it’s a unique habitat to visit in Iowa due to it’s proximity to the Mississippi River which creates an assortment of wetland areas. He promises the birds and the habitat will make for a fun experience for kids. The Port Louisa field trip will be Saturday, November 12th, from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. and is free of charge. Registration is required, and can be done by clicking on the link below. For more information, listen to the In Touch with Southeast Iowa interview with Harms starting Wednesday.
