Fall is the ideal time to plant, dig and divide lilies for optimal performance in spring according to horticulturists with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach. Most lilies perform best in full sun in well-drained, slightly acidic soils. It is important to have good soil drainage and raised beds are a good planting option. Bulbs in wet soils may rot. Lily bulbs should be planted at a depth equal to three times their diameter. To divide lilies, dig up the clump and separate the bulbs, then replant the bulbs immediately. If you aren’t able to plant them right away, put the bulbs in a plastic bag with lightly moistened peat moss and place the bag in the refrigerator. Plant the bulbs as soon as possible.
