A new era of Washington boys’ basketball is underway. Colin Stark, a volunteer assistant last season, was named the new head coach in April. He replaces Bryce Smeins who retired from the Washington School District in May after 20 years as the boys’ basketball coach.

Returning seniors John Dillon, Bryce Sinn, and Mason Rich are guests on tonight’s Winter Sports Preview show. The trio spoke about Stark’s enthusiasm for the game and his desire to build the program. Dillon states Stark put in a leadership program over the summer and the team is watching more film than in previous years. Sinn added he appreciated the effort Stark put in over the summer, opening the gym at least three times a week for the players.

Stark had coaching experience before coming to Washington. His first coaching job came while he was still in college, becoming the top assistant of the Newton girls’ basketball team. After three years with the Cardinals, Stark spent one season as the head girls’ basketball coach of the BCLW Conrad Comets. He posted a 6-17 overall record.

Stark’s coaching debut is set for December 6 as the Demons open the season at Muscatine. Listen to an interview with Dillon, Sinn, and Rich on the Winter Sports Preview show, tonight at 6 p.m. on AM/FM KCII.
