The Washington County Attorney position will be vacated later this year, as the current attorney Shawn Showers has been appointed by Governor Terry Branstad to the 8A Judicial District bench. He will still be in the Washington County Courthouse, just two floors above his current office. The District includes Washington, Keokuk, Appanoose, Davis, Jefferson, Mahaska, Monroe, Poweshiek, Van Buren and Wapello Counties.

Now, the Washington County Board of Supervisors has to decide whether to appoint a new county attorney or hold a special election to fill the vacancy. Electors may petition for a special collection by collecting 1,093 signatures for such.

At Tuesday’s board meeting the supervisors approved unanimously to begin advertising the position immediately. People from out of county can apply, and if selected for the job must be a registered voter of Washington County within 10 days of the appointment, meaning they’d have to become a local resident.

Showers’ last day as a county employee is likely the week before Christmas. He has two years left in his term, as he was elected in 2014 and began serving as the county attorney in January of 2015.
