Washington’s first official wrestling practice isn’t for another 12 days, but the Demons already know who and where they’ll grapple in their postseason opener. The Iowa High School Athletic Association released their sectional district wrestling assignments for all classes last week. The Demons will be in Class 2A Section 4 hosted by the Keokuk Chiefs. The sectional tournament will begin at noon on Saturday, February 4th.

Washington’s postseason road to the state tournament will feature wrestlers from Davis County, Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont, Fairfield, Keokuk, and West Burlington. The top two place winners from each weight class will advance to the district tournament on Saturday, February, 11, at Fairfield High School. Fairfield’s district tournament will also include the top two place winners from Class 2A Section 3, which features wrestlers from Benton, Clear Creek Amana, Columbus, Mid-Prairie, Solon, and Williamsburg.

Washington is coming off the best wrestling season in program history, winning 32 of their 35 duals. The Demons competed in the state dual tournament for the first time, placing sixth out of eight teams. The Demons have 11 returning varsity wrestlers this season, including four who competed in the 2016 Iowa High School Individual State Wrestling Tournament. Last years state qualifiers are Trey Van Weelden, Andrew Waite, Austin Hazelett, and Tristin Westphal-Edwards.

Washington begins practice on Monday, November 14th. The Demons open the competition season at home on November 29th, hosting a quadrangular versus Benton, Iowa Valley, and HLV.
