While the weather in early November has been unseasonably warm, most Iowans know snow could be around the corner at any moment. With that in mind, the City of Kalona reminds citizens about the rules they have regarding snow and its removal. During heavy snow events that require city-wide removal, no person shall park, abandon, or leave unattended any vehicle in any public street, alley, or city-owned parking lot. The exception is if the snow has already been removed from the area, and has ceased to fall.

They also remind people it’s their responsibility to remove snow and ice from sidewalks on their property. If they don’t remove it within a reasonable time, the city may do so, and assess the costs against the property owner. Finally, Kalona emphasizes it’s unlawful to throw, push, or place any ice or snow from private property such as driveways or sidewalks onto the traveled way of a street or alley. This includes obstructing gutters, impeding the passage of vehicles, or creating a hazardous condition on the street. Anyone with questions regarding snow ordinances in the City of Kalona should reach out to the City Clerk or Administrator.
