Area law enforcement authorities are warning people to watch out for phone scams during the holiday. Sgt. Brad Kunkel from the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office warns people of the scam happening locally. Victims report receiving a phone call from someone stating they’re a grandchild or law enforcement asking for bail money or gift cards because their grandchild has been arrested. He adds, a scammer may identify themselves as an attorney. People are reminded to not send any money or provide personal information to the caller.

If you receive a call like this, contact your local law enforcement and report the call. Also, if you receive a call like this, you can call the authorities to verify if someone is in jail. Law enforcement does not call citizens for bail money and gift cards are never accepted as a form of bail.
