A new support group for moms is coming to Washington County – a breastfeeding support group. Carol Detweiler with Washington County Public Health is a certified lactation counselor and will be leading the group. The meetings will be for women who are pregnant, new moms or mothers of multiple children. Detweiler shares she helps many women in the area.
She says breastfeeding has many benefits for the baby including developing antibodies to lining the intestinal tract and dental health. It also helps the mother, studies have shown it can reduce the risk of ovarian cancer and breast cancer.
The first meeting will be held at the Kalona Public Library this Friday at 11:30 a.m.
