Thirty-nine people have died in fires in Iowa this year, up eight from 2015. One of those fatalities happened in Washington in June when 22-year-old Deshia Matthew died in a house fire where no smoke detectors were installed. According to the State Fire Marshal Division, of those 39 deaths only six were known to have working smoke detectors present. The State Fire Marshal Division reminds Iowans to properly install and maintain smoke alarms, which are key to ensuring early notification in a fire and improving the chance of survival.
